SOLD! 1955 Wolfsburg Semaphore Standard Microbus!
This
is a very cool April 1955 post Barndoor transitional Standard Microbus
that has all of the early Wolfsburg factory characteristics. Some of its special
early features include Barndoor long ribbed front bumper, tubular
transmission hanger, seamed doglegs, Wolfsburg brakelight decklid with
the open rear bracing, 6 leg middle seat, Wolfsburg rear seat with the
sharp middle leg, lipless front air intake vents with the large mesh
screens, rubber seal around the gas door, single position rear hatch,
all matching original large logo SEKURIT glass, semaphore turn signals, 70 mph speedometer, rare early Telefunken radio, working
original ambulance fan, matching numbers "20-" 36hp engine, split case
transaxle, original 6 volt electrical system, matching 1/55 dated
crow's foot 15" Bus wheels, original semaphore Bus taillights, Barndoor
bakelite domelights, and so much more.
The
body
had a recent driver class respray in the original Palm Green over Sand
Green paint scheme. It is in good shape and is complete with all the
correct parts
including original pressed bumpers, brakelight decklid, flat high
hinged cargo doors, and correct crankstart apron. It is also a 6
popout window optioned Bus with correct long spoon popout latches in
good shape. The nose is perfect, roof is excellent, sides are very
straight, corners are very nice, etc. New popout window seals were
just installed as well. Overall a very solid Bus with none of the
typical hacks usually seen.
It has survived very well over the last 54 years.
The
interior is complete with all 3 original and very difficult to find
seats including
the correct Barndoor 6 leg middle seat and the Wolfsburg sharp middle
legged rear seat. The middle and rear are in unbelievably nice original
"Soft Green" upholstery and the front was just professionally recovered
at Octavio's in matching material. The Barndoor bakelite domelights
are in great shape, original
Telefunken radio with booster box lights up and hums but I haven't been
able to tune in a station. I'm sure it's an easy fix to get it to
function properly. The original ambulance fan works well and the red
light even lights up. 2 of the 3 original Barndoor/Split Beetle
armrests are also intact and present. The original mohair headliner
was replaced many years ago with a pinhole vinyl which is decent
overall. It's very impressive that the typically missing original
interior is still present and in good shape after more than half a
century.
Mechanically this Bus is fully turnkey and
features the incredibly impressive matching numbers original 20- 36hp
Bus engine with the original stamped dealer booklet to verify that
fact. It has the correct crankstart tin, crankstart nut, thin lipped
crank pulley, single tip exhaust, etc. It fires right up and runs
smoothly. The original split case trans shifts smoothly and positively
and doesn't jump out of gear or grind. The original 15" Bus wheels
have new radial tires and painted logo chromed VW hubcaps.
This
Bus
is extremely close to the end of Barndoor production and has all of
the early post Barndoor and Barndoor carryover characteristics that
make a 1955 so much cooler than later pressed bumper Buses. It is in a
very enjoyable condition as a driver currently and would make an
excellent base for a extremely high level restoration in that it has
been a dry Central California Bus the majority of its life, it hasn't
been hacked with typical modifications, it is complete with all of the
earliest Barndoor/Wolfsburg components still present and in great
shape, and the unbelievable achievement of still having the matching
numbers original 36hp engine as well. Rarely do you find such a
particular and early example of Bus so complete, intact, and solid. SOLD!
