1956 Karmann Kabriolett Oval Convertible Beetle, Beautifully Restored!
Here's an excellent example of timeless styling, a very tastefully executed
Oval window
era Convertible Beetle. This car underwent a comprehensive
professional restoration a handful of years and very few miles back and
still displays wonderfully as the many pics will show. Rest assured, a
great deal of care and money were spent to bring this early Karmann to
this head turning and enjoyable condition.
Some of its cool features include having all of the correct early body
components in excellent shape, fully rebuilt and detailed stock 1192cc
36hp engine and split case transaxle, bullet turn signals, snowflake
taillights, ice pick door handles, early accessory windshield washer
squirter system, accessory exhaust "cheese grater", correct bias ply
wide white wall tires,
high quality canvas top wrapping a fully restored top assembly with paint detail and new wood bows, and much more.
The body of this nearly 54 year old
Convertible has survived very well and is finished in a very nice coat of
black paint.
This was a professional job on a superb body that obviously was never
abused or rotted as so many early Convertibles are. I would classify
the paint as extremely nice for an occasional driver and I've seen full
show cars with paint not as well done as this. We have found no
evidence of existing rust in the body or the pan. There are some small
spots where a couple patches look to have been welded in at the lower
front fender well area. They are very clean and properly and
professionally done. All of the body components are correct including
the flat tab hood, bullet fenders, convertible doors, H pattern apron,
beautiful original convertible W decklid complete with rain catcher and
drain tubes, correct original
rear window assembly,
etc. The top was completely restored and functions smoothly and
correctly and a original style top boot with matching red beading is
also included. The chrome was redone on the window frames and is very
clean. They detailed the pan and undersides of the fenders as well so
this Convertible is sterile throughout. All of the body and window
seals were also replaced at the time of restoration and are still soft
and supple.
The interior is fresh, clean, comfortable and finished in red
leatherette. While it is extremely respectable as it sits it could
also be brought to the next level with a more faithful to original set
of seat covers, door panels, and German square weave carpet kit such as
what is offered from Lenny at West Coast Classics. Nitpicky, yes, but
worth the mention. The original
steering wheel
was fully restored and is excellent as well and is topped off with a
very nice original Wolfsburg crest horn button. The dash is clean,
uncut, and has the correct 80mph clear needle speedometer, radio block
off plate, hard to find white knobbed dome light toggle switch, and
chrome locking hood release. The early top latches are in great shape
and pivot effortlessly as well. The often missing, hard to find, and
expensive Oval Convertible rear view mirror is also present, in good
shape, and is topped off with a rare set of NOS Convertible sun visors. The
mohair headliner is also in nice shape. Inside the trunk is also very
sterile with the correct early gas tank, a matching brand new bias ply
white wall spare, very nice original early jack, hardboard wiring
cover, and unmolested wiring.
Mechanically this 1956 has been completely gone through with a fully
rebuilt and expertly detailed 1192cc 36hp engine, original first gear
non-synchromesh split case transaxle, original 6 volt electrical
system, and a completely rebuilt
braking system
just over a year ago. The tires have excellent tread and are correct
style and size 5.60-15 bias ply wide white walls mounted on stock
original 15 inch smoothies which are correctly two toned in ivory and
black and topped with chrome hubcaps with painted logos and
polished stainless steel
beauty rings. It starts right up
with the fully functioning manual choke, runs nicely, drives
beautifully, and has made a handful of couple hundred plus mile trips
up and down the California coast in the last few years without
incident.
This early Karmann Kabriolett is a very desirable and appreciating
classic that will certainly provide many miles of enjoyment for its new
owner.
