Oval Ragtop "SLOVAL" Vintage Style Street and
Drag Beetle!
Here is one outrageous, powerful, and ultra cool
vintage style Oval Ragtop street machine and drag car! If you like to
blend into your surroundings and get your ass kicked at the drag races,
this is not the car for you! However, if you enjoy the sounds of a
pissed off 14:1 compression 2387cc engine with 48IDA Webers, super loud
straight cut cam gears, and the
throaty tone of a Flowmaster muffler, well you might want to take a
look at this.
This beast has a cool Southern California history,
too. It was purchased brand new at Don Sharp Volkswagen Porsche in
Oceanside, California back in 1956. Sometime around the 1970's the car
was owned by a gentleman who worked for Cal Trans and he apparently was
proud of that fact when he decided to cover up
the original Prairie Beige paint with a fresh coat of very
hip-at-the-time "Cal Trans Orange"! It served as his daily driver and
commuter car for many years before being retired to a warehouse in
Escondido, California where it spent 18 years parked next to a 1940
Willys hotrod! It was discovered and rescued by a certified VW nut who
fulfilled his vision and built the monster you now see. It has earned a
healthy share of respect and press on the track, at local shows, as
well as publications and the Cal Look Forums as well as earning its
stripes by becoming a member of the DVKK 100 mile per hour club!
The
body is impressively solid and original with all the original fenders, W
decklid, flat hood, both aprons including the rear H, icepick handled
doors, etc. It did see some obvious period updates including the
shaving of the bullets (you can see the outline of them in the
bodywork), adding of the front blinkers, and updated
taillights as well. There is the obvious rust in the upper corners of
the hood, some blistering on the lower driver's door, and the battery
tray needs replacing. Other than that it looks pretty good for a body
that hasn't been touched since the 1970's. It is a factory original
Ragtop car, too! The Cal Trans Orange paint was applied long ago just
on the exterior while under the hood, inside the engine compartment, and
the interior are all still showing the original Prairie Beige paint.
The paint is a bit tired but could all polish up a bit with a little
care.
The interior still maintains a good bit of originality and
vintage appeal although it is a bit ratty. The door panels, carpets,
floor mats, and interior paint are all original as well. The seats were
updated way back to 1967 style low backs and vintage Diest racing
harness seat belts were also added. A roll cage was also installed for
added
safety and this car has also been known to run wheelie bars for more
than just fashion, too. Racing regulations state that a wooden battery
cover must be added so one is in place as well. Not sure if the vintage
radio works or not but trust that you can't hear a damn thing over the
screaming 2 liter anyway!
Mechanically this Oval Ragtop is all
business with a huge 2387cc engine with quality components throughout
including 48 IDA Weber carbs, fully counterweighted, balanced, nitrided,
and wedgemated crank, fully reworked heads with loads of tricks,
Paradise cam, straight cut cam gears, a new Mexican AS-41 case, deep
sump, full flow oiling, remote oil cooler, huge diameter merged header,
and a Flowmaster muffler, all assembled and recently refreshed by the
guys at Paradise VW. The transaxle is built to handle the power with a
old school spool, Berg gears, and Berg axles as well. The front beam is
a light weight Jamar
aluminum setup with adjusters to tune the stance and the front drums
were turned down and front brakes eliminated to save weight, too. The
emergency brake has been converted to a staging brake. The wheels are
ultra light and fully polished Deano Dyno Soars style wheels. The front
tires are 135's and it is running fresh 26 inch M&H Racemaster
slicks out back. Additionally a pair of super narrow dragster front
pizza cutters are included in the sale. This car is angry, powerful,
and has more than enough go to lift the front wheels. The fuel system
is fully electric and outfitted with a return line. It has already been
plumbed and wired for nitrous oxide if you really want to push the
limit. The nitrous trigger is wired to the original Wolfsburg
hornbutton so you just honk the horn to blast off and signal to the
loser in the lane next to you that you're increasing your lead! The
Sloval has made
quarter mile passes of 11.6 seconds at roughly 120mph. Imagine the
pride of spanking that douchebag in the new Mustang down the street.
This
Oval is a truly brutal Cal Looker that is ready to be a fresh new face
and hit of the next Euro Bug-In this Summer in Chimay, Belgium! Thanks!
