1958 Westfalia Camping Box, Beautiful Unrestored Survivor in Original Paint!

1958 Westfalia Camping Box, Original Paint Palm Green over Sand Green!

This early Westfalia is quite possibly the nicest unrestored original paint pressed bumper Westy in the World.  The number of nice survivors is very low and this is believed to be the best of the surviving original paint examples.  Without question it is certain to be a standout in any serious Bus collectors stable.

Some of the cool and interesting features include the strong original Palm Green over Sand Green paint, very straight and dry body, comes with red propane stove tank, stock running gear, and what is quite possibly the nicest original Campingbox interior in existence.

The body is in great original condition, super straight, only minor dents, dings, and the obvious stone chips, etc.  It is extremely dry with no significant rust to mention and the undercarriage will surprise you with how clean and dry it is.  For those of you who might be wondering why it lacks the pinstripe, well, Westfalia received the early Buses as Kombis and painted them themselves, hence the black front seat, pressboard panels in the cab, etc.  The paint is very thick, has a great mild patina look, and holds a great shine as well.  Since these pics were taken the rearward cargo door has been replaced with a better matching original paint door so it looks more uniform as well.  Even the 15 inch Bus wheels are wearing original paint!  There was a little metal work done in the engine compartment on the engine surround metal where it had been trimmed many years ago to fit a Type 3 engine.  The repair was done well and most people would leave it alone but if you are a perfectionist you may want to touch it up a bit.  All of the doors, engine lid, apron, bumpers, etc. are correct for the Bus.  Additionally, for those of you who might be under the impression that the "eyebrow" decklid is incorrect, in fact late 1958 featured this decklid and it is correct and original to the Bus.  You'd be very hard pressed to find a nicer unrestored Campingbox body than this!

The interior is remarkable, positively one of the nicest surviving examples of an early Campingbox and without a doubt, early Westy buffs will be saving these pics as a reference for what their interiors ought to look like as they restore their own.  There is an awesome light and natural patina which is uniform throughout.  The original seat cushions are in nice shape with some light water staining and the bottoms had begun to wear through so the undersides were replaced to preserve them as much as possible.  We have no knowledge of a nicer set of original Campingbox cushions anywhere in the World!  You will also notice that the very rare and valuable red propane stove gas tank is still present.  A few of the cabinet knobs have been replaced with slightly similar knobs over the years but otherwise the interior is complete and original.

Mechanically the Bus is fully turnkey and ready to enjoy.  It features a good running and stock 1192cc 36hp engine, split case transaxle, and a stock 6 volt electrical system.  The brakes were completely rebuilt last Summer and it also received a full set of 5 new Firestone 6.40-15 bias ply tires at that time.

This is clearly a window of opportunity to land an extremely well-preserved, special, significant, and desirable early Westfalia.  If I sound excited, it's for good reason, this Bus is a serious heavyweight and it draws a healthy dose of well-deserved respect from knowledgeable early Bus enthusiasts.  Thanks!
