1959 Karmann Ghia Coupe!

1959 Karmann Ghia Coupe in Aerosilver, California Car, Fresh and Beautiful Show Winner!

This extremely fresh and clean 1959 Low Light Ghia was originally owned by an Engineer named Larry Shaw of Goleta, California, a small community just outside of Santa Barbara, and served as his daily commuter car for many years.  Upon Larry's passing, his wife, Mary, sold the car to the current owner on the condition that he agreed to restore the car on Larry's behalf.  The deal was gladly accepted, the Ghia was beautifully restored, and it recently took First In Class honors at the VW Classic show in Southern California.  Needless to say, Mrs. Shaw was proud to hear of the achievement and happy to see that her husband's special car that he had taken great care of for so many years has begun such a positive new chapter of its life.

This complete bare metal and body-off-pan restoration process has involved the combined efforts of many well-known Vintage Volkswagen specialists including:

Ruben Vasquez, steering wheel restoration and more

Alex at West Coast Classics Restoration, interior restoration

Scott Dempster of Karmann Ghia Parts and Restoration, rubber and many hard-to-find items supplied

Larry Reno, speedometer and dash component restoration

Heather at World Upholstery, interior supplies

Faith Plating for chrome and plating work

Lisa Lamacchia of Martin Autocolor in Simi Valley, California, perfect color-matched L248 Aerosilver paint and trim

Manny Vega of Anacapa Soda Blasting in Oxnard, California

Edward Faulkner of Whittier, California rebuilt the 36hp engine and split case transaxle

Wolfsburg West for many parts and supplies

This original California black plate Ghia was in unusually good and solid condition prior to the restoration, due in large part to Mr. Shaw's careful ownership, and the dry California climate which it has lived in.  Other than an older repaint that it had long ago, the car survived exceedingly well compared to most first generation Ghias.  There was surprisingly little rust compared to most early Ghias and included the lower fenders, floor pan, and battery area.  The nose is one of the highlights and seems to have had no damage whatsoever.  The rear end and corners were also exceptionally nice with no significant damage apparent.  The paint colors of L248 Aerosilver with the L281 Grey White roof are original to the car and are confirmed by the Birth Certificate straight from Volkswagen.  The underside of the car is extremely clean as well including the floor pan, inner fender wells, front axle, transaxle, and lower body, too.

The interior is gorgeous, fresh, and was faithfully restored by Alex of West Coast Classics.  Details to note include the correct Karmann Ghia steering wheel and horn ring that were professionally restored by Ruben Vasquez, the German square weave carpeting, superb and correct pattern door panels and seat upholstery, restored gauges, powder coated seat frames, correct firewall rubber mat, new door sill plates, correct Ghia window winders, and so much more.  This one is super clean and pretty inside, under the hood and engine lid, outside, and on the underside, too!

The mechanical restoration was professionally handled by Edward Faulkner and includes the period correct 1192cc 36hp engine, split case transaxle, suspension, and electrical as well.  The wheels have been powder coated and are two-toned, have a new set of Firestone 5.60-15 wide white wall tires, and a set of correct polished trim rings as well.  The car has seen very little driving since completion and is as fresh as the day it was completed.

A correct aircleaner is currently being restored for it and the original carburetor, vacuum advance distributor, and American spec bumper overriders will all be included in the sale as well.

As always, feel free to contact me for additional information, pics, and details regarding this incredibly clean early Ghia.  Thanks!
