1959 Double Door Panel Bus, Original Postal Yellow Paint, Cool Driver!
Here
we have a super cool, very enjoyable, mechanically refreshed, early
Double Door Panel Bus in relatively rare original factory Postal Yellow
(SK 648) paint.
This Bus has a long list of
features including over 90% original Postal Yellow paint, a recently
rebuilt 1641cc dual port engine, freshly built big nut transaxle, 12
volt conversion, new Firestone 6.40-15 bias ply tires, bullet turn
signals, round glass taillights, small rear window, fresh and proper
interior panels including the cab divider, and a new original style
front seat cover just to name a handful. Overall this Bus is the
perfect mixture of being nice enough to love and respect but not too
nice so you can still relax and enjoy it as a regular driver.
The
body is in "fair +" condition with over 90% of the original Postal
Yellow paint still showing proudly. There are lots of dents, dings,
scrapes, and some peeled paint patches around as you'd expect to find on
a now 52 year old driver. There have been some localized rust repairs
done including both outer rockers and a older patch on the passenger's
dogleg. Those areas as well as a few others
have been match
painted in a close lacquer.
Additionally the original slash cut bumpers have been resprayed in the
proper Black and also received new uprights. There are several thin and
perforated spots down low in the normal places including the front
floor, front wheel well closeout on one side, and some spots on the
original belly pans as well. The rear corner trays on both sides are
nice and solid. The extensive album of pics on my site at
www.holygrailgarage.com very clearly document the good and bad points of
the body.
The interior is pretty clean and faithful to the
original design. The original paint dash is in pretty good condition
with some paint loss and a couple very small added holes surrounding the
headlight switch. The correct 70mph clear needle speedometer and
proper radio block off plate are both in place. All of the grey pressed
board panels are accurate reproductions including the pocketed door
panels, kick panels, headliner panels,
and even the
Panel Bus specific cab divider with the original glass window, too.
Additionally the Bus has the correct original early front floor mat and
the original front seat has a brand new and perfectly fitted Wolfsburg
West grey seat cover that is correct for Commercial Buses of this
generation.
Mechanically the Bus has seen a great deal of
servicing and upgrades throughout including a strong running and
recently rebuilt 1641cc dual port engine, freshly built big nut
transaxle with all new bearings including the reduction boxes and a 4.12
ring and pinion, rebuilt nose cone, and a custom fabricated nose cone
mount that utilizes a GM saddle mount. This special mount has kept the
original torsion housing and nose cone mount from being modified. Other
mechanical details include a complete 1967 front beam with factory sway
bar and a nice and tight steering box both out of a 60,000 original
mile Bus. The drag link is also brand
new and the complete shift rod and linkage assembly was rebuilt and
lubed as necessary. The entire braking system was also rebuilt with new
wheel cylinders, rubber lines, shoes, wheel bearings, beautiful and
thick original German drums, etc. The electrical system has been
completely to 12 volt and features a spendy Optima battery, too. The
original wiring is in excellent shape and everything works! The wheels
are proper 15 inch slotted Bus wheels that have been powder coated in
gloss black and have 4 fresh new Firestone 6.40-15 bias ply tires on
them and a new 165 on the spare. This Bus is an awesome driver,
extensively serviced, and ready for action. Thanks!
