Double Door Kombi, Original Dove Blue Paint, Company Logo from a Fire Extinguisher Service, and more!
Here we have yet another early, rare, interesting, and desirable survivor Bus which is a legend in the Southern California Bus community.
This
is 1 of approximately 6 known bullet turn signaled Double Door Kombis
known to exist in the World and potentially the only one left in its
original paint.
This ultra cool Kombi was discovered by a
very well respected and missed Bus enthusiast in
New Mexico back in the
early 1990's. He revived it after it had been parked for years and
immediately made it his signature driver having taken it on adventures
literally all over the United States. Over the years this Bus has made
several cross country trips and I believe the longest was from
Los
Angeles, California to
Portsmouth, New Hampshire. To say that it is a
road warrior with tons of loving history is an understatement. The Bus
positively has a great vibe to it.
Its
list of features includes original safari windows installed years ago
by Charlie Hamill, all 3 seats including the
correct, incredibly rare, and uber valuable "double flipper" middle
seat, original
company logos from a dry chemical fire extinguisher
service,
original interior panels, nice original paint dash with radio block off
plate still intact, bullet turn signals, glass taillights, small rear
window, ice pick door handles, original 15" Bus wheels with Firestone
6.40
bias ply tires, freshly rebuilt 1600 single port engine, 12 volt
conversion for reliability, early screw
connector wiring harness,
correct slash cut bumpers, and so much more.
The body is still in
its original Dove Blue paint and is generally very straight. This is a
real deal true Double Door, not some homemade attempt in order to wow
the afficianados, but a legitimate factory Double Door. There are some
light dents and dings as you'd expect with a 49 year old Bus without
any "make up" on it. The front floor will eventually need corner
wedges at some point but it's been driven as it is for many years
without much concern and could certainly continue to be enjoyed as it
is. The undercarriage and belly pans, yes, belly pans that all
double
door and sunroof Buses got at the factory, are all in very clean shape,
solid, and still have factory undercoating on them. The lower doglegs will also need some small patches eventually
as well as a few other small spots down low.
The
interior is complete with everything, original pocketed door cards in
nice shape, all 3 correct bench seats although they technically should
have grey upholstery but look great in the current black scheme, nice
original floor mats, very nice original dash, correct chrome ribbed cab
door handles with the black bakelite escutcheons, etc.
Mechanically
it would originally have had a 1200cc 40hp but that has been upgraded
to a very nice running and freshly rebuilt stock 1600cc single port engine, converted to 12
volts for reliability, and has a stock reduction box transaxle. The
brakes were redone a few years back using all German parts as well.
The tires are Firestone 6.40-15 black wall bias plies on stock restored
15" Bus wheels with beautiful original grey painted commercial hubcaps
with painted logos.
The Bus runs and drives great and keeps up with
traffic very well. I personally drove this Bus to 5 events during 2007
and received many compliments on it.
Overall a great Bus with
awesome patina, a great history, and fully turnkey and ready to enjoy. $25,000
Please note this rare Double Door Kombi is located in San Diego, California. Thanks!
