Sold!  1961 Panel Bus, Running and Driving Project!

1961 Panel Bus, Driving California Project Bus!

Here is a decent early Panel Bus that runs and drives but will need some dialing in to be completely road worthy and up to speed.  This one would be good for a guy who would like something he can work on a little at a time doing small projects when he has the time and funds to do so.

Some of the features include being a long time California Bus with a single vintage California blue commercial license plate, aftermarket safari windows (rusty frames and cracked glass, replacement glass included in sale), brand new Firestone 6.40-15 bias ply tires with about 100 miles on them, a 1600 dual port engine, and a 12 volt electrical system.

The body is in decent shape, pretty straight, and has some rust around in normal places including the lower nose, rockers, blistering and some holes above the gutters, battery tray, perforation on the passenger's front floor, and a big patch on the drivers front floor.  The rear floor is very impressively solid, straight, and clean, too.  The cargo doors have popout windows in them, the decklid is a 1966/1967 push button type with a funky home made decklid prop and catch welded on the apron.  The bumpers are in relatively nice shape and are the correct slash cut style.  The bulkhead wall was previously cut out and has since been repaired.  Other body details include bullet turn signals, ice pick handled front doors, thick lipped doglegs, high hinge cargo doors, outie vents, and round taillights with older KDF logoed plastic reproduction lenses.

The interior is pretty bare as you can see.  The front seat is a very nice original upholstery hump back (upper portion on backrest may have been replaced?), the dash has a aftermarket gas gauge cut in that works (not sure on accuracy though), a hole cut for a cigarette lighter, and the radio hole has been opened up but is covered by a very nice original paint Dove Blue radio block off plate.  The front floor mat is an original VW mat as well.  The original cab divider is present and has an original logoed window in it, too.

Mechanically this Panel runs and drives but will need some dialing in.  It features a 1600 dual port engine with a alternator, Bosch 009 distributor, and a electric fuel pump.  It idles high and would benefit from a good cleaning and tune up.  The transaxle is a stock reduction box unit that shifts fine without popping out of gear and the tires are brand new Firestone 6.40-15 bias plies with about 100 miles on them.  They are mounted on freshly repainted Silver White 15 inch slotted Bus wheels and the chrome hubcaps with painted logos are what will come with the Bus.  The steering is a bit loose and the owner puts it best when he says you do a bit of "panning for gold" out on the freeway to sail it straight.  The headlights, blinkers, and taillights work but the dome lights, wipers, license light, and high beams will need work as they are not currently functioning.

Overall this Bus is a cool, affordable, and decent looking early model that is a good start on making a regular driver out of.  Thanks!
