1962 Ragtop Beetle OG!  47,383 Original Miles!

1962 Ragtop Beetle with 47,383 Original Miles, Phenomenal Survivor!

Here's one for the purist collectors who appreciate unrestored gems.  This L87 Pearl White Ragtop Beetle has averaged less than 1000 miles of driving for the 48 years of its life.  It is extremely original, matching numbers, no rust, with the paint, interior, seat covers, engine, transaxle, pan, wheels, rubber, spare tire, and all the glass including the windshield being factory original.  If that hasn't already grabbed your attention, how about it having the owners manual, dealer service booklet, and the original window sticker, too?  You just don't find nicer survivors than this.

The car has always been garaged and it shows as the paint and body are as nice, straight, dry, and shiny as you could imagine.  Again, there is no rust on this car.  There are some extremely minor stone chips on the front end but surprisingly little for what you might expect to see on an untouched nearly half century old Beetle.  In fact those minor imperfections serve as proof for the doubters who have a hard time believing the car has never been repainted.  All of the body components are correct and original, doors, aprons, early hood with Wolfsburg crest, small beak decklid, original German chrome bumpers in excellent shape, etc.  Take note of the complimentary colored white fender beading and running board rubber mats which are a neat and correct detail for this Pearl White Beetle.  Also pay close attention to the little details throughout the closeup pics and you will see that this early Beetle has never been abused, molested, modified, or even been dirty for that matter.  You really can never underestimate the value of a very well cared for survivor like this.

The interior is equally as impressive and original with the "True Red" leatherette seat covers being all original, door panels, new oatmeal German square weave carpets, NOS front rubber floor mat with new Wolfsburg West rear, uncut dash with correct Sapphire radio, original headliner, mint original glove box, beautiful seat belts with new Wolfsburg decals, and a rear seat that probably didn't look any nicer the day it was installed at the factory.  Under the front hood is completely sterile and bone stock as well with the mint original Continental spare tire, perfect original wiring cover, and excellent original trunk liner mat all fully intact and beautiful.  It is really amazingly well-preserved throughout, an excellent example to study for those who are restoring similar cars.

Mechanically this Beetle is completely original, correct, and runs and drives as beautifully as you would expect a car with the equivalent use of a 3 year old car to have.  The original stale air 40hp engine is beautiful, completely correct, and features no aftermarket parts.  Pay close attention to the condition of the tin, the lack of corrosion or calcification on the case, the original VW stamped logo muffler, and the almost never seen original "pigtail" metal vacuum line connecting the distributor and carburetor.  Absolutely everything works and the electrical system is also still the factory original 6 volt setup.  The tires are new and correct 5.60-15 wide white wall bias plies mounted on the incredibly nice original paint Clay Beige and Pearl White two-toned smoothie rims with original painted logo chromed caps topping them off.

Serious long-time collectors have always recognized the value in time capsule survivors like this and I believe over the years the appreciation of originality has grown exponentially.  There is a special and appealing feel to an original car that can never be duplicated even on the nicest of restorations.  When it comes right down to it the truth is that a restoration would be a recreation of what this car was like back in 1962 while this phenomenal survivor is still the essence of what it has always been since 1962.  They are only original once and this is as original as they get.
