1964 Standard Sunroof Slider Door Walkthru Microbus, the Genuine Article! Rare!
Here
is what is undoubtedly one of the rarest Buses you will ever lay eyes
on. An early 1964 Standard Microbus with factory Sunroof, optional
Sliding Cargo Door, and factory Walkthru
seating! This Bus is the real deal with the original M code plate to
back it up! As if that weren't already enough to impress, the Bus was a
European delivery and has a optional European style "Fahrt Start"
ignition switch/steering column lock and probably the wildest part about
it, it was ordered WITHOUT middle
and rear seats! We are stumped as to what the original owner's
intentions were when they custom ordered this Bus back in late 1963.
The immediate reaction would be that he would have used it for a
delivery Bus of some sort but choosing a Panel Bus or a Kombi seems to
have made more sense than the two-toned Standard Microbus passenger Bus
with the full headliner and interior panels. At any rate this Bus is a
monster with a very wild combination of factory options to say the
least!
The
body is in fair shape and displays original paint on the top half and
an older respray on the lower half. The Bus is an original Turkis and
Blue White (L380/L289) Standard and features the early icepick cab door
handles as
it was produced in November of 1963. It does require
some rust repair and metal work including the lower nose valance both
inner and outer (an NOS German inner is included in the sale), both rear
corners/battery trays, some on the driver's dogleg, and at least some
patching on the cargo floor or one might opt to replace the whole cargo
floor with their availability these days. Additionally a previous owner
removed the original belly pans and a set of Gerson's funky green belly
pans are included in the sale as well. The jackpoints could also
replacement/attention and a set of 4 will come with the Bus. The front
floor corners have also been repaired. The lower nose does have some
filler in it that is starting to crack a bit. All of the doors,
decklid, apron, slash cut bumpers, and 15 inch wheels are correct for
the Bus as well. The Bus will also come with an extra slider door and a
super rare NOS slider door popout window latch.
The
interior features most of the original Como Green panels which are a
bit ratty. One very cool detail is that the long panel does not have
the holes punched out for the armrests which coincides with the "no rear
seating" M code. I don't recall ever having seen a panel like that
before, pretty cool. The original vinyl headliner is ratty but still
intact enough to be a perfect example of how it should be when you
replace it. The dash is in pretty good shape with an uncut radio hole
and just a couple small holes below the gas gauge. A set of Bay Window
middle and rear seats are included although as mentioned previously this
Bus was built without middle and rear seats originally.
Mechanically
the Bus will require revival
as it has been in storage for more than 10 years now. It features a
1600 dual port engine and a big nut transaxle that is in good
condition. The electrical system was converted to 12 volts, too.
Expect to do some work in each department including battery, brakes,
tires, tuning, etc. It was a good driver when it was last in service
10-12 years ago.
This is a very rare and cool Bus with some
crazy factory options that you'll likely never witness ever again in
this combination! It has good bones as a project and could easily be
revived and driven while you restore it. Why waste time restoring an
ordinary Bus when you can build this very affordable monster and have
something truly exceptional and remarkable after the same amount of
effort? Don't think too long, I don't expect this rare Bus to last.
Thanks!
