1965 Australian Right Hand Drive Notchback, Original Paint, Stylish and Rare!
This
1965
Notchback has a unique and interesting story to it. The assembly of
the car started in Australia in 1965 and is denoted by the 315 code on
the VIN tag and pan and is further substantiated on the Birth
Certificate that came straight from Volkswagen themselves. Volkswagen
of Australia production didn't follow the same German guidelines and
shortly thereafter Volkswagen Germany did an audit on Volkswagen
Australia and Australian VW production was interrupted for a spell.
Late in 1966 Volkswagen Australia was green-lighted and resumed with
finishing these previously incompleted cars, doing so according to the
new 1967 model year colors and interior combinations. This example
could very well be the only remaining original paint and interior
1965/1967 Australian Notchback in existence. Furthermore this specific
model is an Australian "Deluxe" which had a trim package between the
bare bones "N" model and the top of the line "S"
model. The "Deluxe" was unique to the Australian market and was
available in 67 cars. Bottom line, this is a very unique, rare, and
stylish early Notchback.
Some of the very long list of features
on this Notch include having 95% original Savannah Beige Paint, original
interior, being a factory original Australian Right Hand Drive, Porsche
pattern front disc brakes, Flat 4 Porsche Fuchs style wheels done up by
Al Reed, red needle gauges (original white needle gauges are included
in sale), ultra rare NOS Type 3 bumper guards, genuine vintage metal
Australian rear window blinds, rare Kamei gas cruiser pedal, NOS Type 3
large cat eye hooded Albert mirrors, rare original Australia-only VW
logoed radio, Australian brochures, original Australia front license
plate, and it was a former 5 page Ultra VW feature car in the December
2009 issue.
The body is in nice shape and still displaying
approximately 95% original Savannah
Beige paint. It is very straight and clean but has some scratches,
tiny dings, and imperfections as you'd expect on a 45 year old
survivor. There is also some very cool looking sun fading primarily on
the roof. There is a small spot of rust on the passenger's rear quarter
panel behind the rear wheel. Other than that, the body and pan are
exceptional and solid. The original paint color sticker is still intact
in the front trunk area and the "316" denotes factory Right Hand Drive
while the numbers following that is the total VWs produced in Australia.
The
interior is also original and in impressive condition with the seat
upholstery, door panels, carpet, headliner, rare and beautiful original
RHD dash pad, and paint all being original as well. The front seats
need to be restitched on the upper corner beading as the stitching has
dissolved in the normal fashion. The headliner is near perfect and
shows some
age-related discoloration.
Mechanically the car is fully
turnkey, a great driver, and was just serviced with a full tune up,
valve adjustment, and oil changed performed less than 50 miles ago. The
engine is a stock 1500cc with Type 3 dual carbs. The tires are
Firestones with 125's up front and 195-60-15's out back. Additionally
the front end was rebuilt using NOS German ball joints and tie rod ends
and the original packaging is included in the sale. The car fires right
up, drives straight and tight, and is ready to enjoy.
In all
likelihood, this is the only "survivor" example of its kind in the
United States and possibly the World for that matter. It's very
tastefully done and ready for fun with a new owner. Thanks!
