1965 Westy Original Survivor!

1965 Westfalia SO42 Hardtop Camper, Velvet Green, Phenomenal Survivor, 9670 Original Miles!

Here is what is undoubtedly the nicest unrestored SO42 Westfalia Camper Bus I've ever seen.  This Camper is an original Tourist Delivery Program Bus that was delivered in Europe, shipped back to its home in California, and was sparingly enjoyed as a family vacation recreational vehicle from 1965 until 1973.  At that time it experienced a generator issue, went into storage in a warehouse, and was only recently revived in 2014 after 41 years of hibernation.  It is a true California black plate survivor class Bus with original paint, superb interior, no rust, original 1500cc engine, and 9670 miles showing on the odometer.  According to the original owner, this Bus had never left the Napa Valley after it returned from Europe.  Additionally the original dealer service booklet, owner's manual, dealer locater pamphlet, tool roll, and jack are all included.

The body and paint are essentially a best case scenario for an unrestored survivor.  Super straight, dry as can be, and still displaying the original L512 Velvet Green paint.  Make no mistake, it has its share of dings, scratches, and stone chips, as much from 50 years of life on Earth as from being driven over the 8 years it was in service.  The paint is very thick, strong, and glossy as you can see.  The paint on the bumpers, wheels, and L345 Light Grey hubcaps is also original with light signs of their half century of life.  The floors, rockers, roof, gutters, and inner wheel wells are simply mind blowing.  The front floor looks as if it's never even been dirty with not even any dirt or staining on the waffling on the underside of the floor mat.  The rockers are as clean, straight, and dry as can be.  The undercarriage shows nothing besides some dirt and surface oxidation, and the inner wheel wells look factory besides some very old splatters of road
tar from many decades ago.  The doors, decklid, apron, correct slash cut front bumper and pointed rear (1965 only combination), excellent original round mirrors and arms, and 14 inch Bus wheels are correct and original to the Bus.

The interior is extremely clean, very original, and about as sterile as can be for an unrestored 50 year old Camper.  Details to note include the superb original dash including the dealer installed radio (light comes on, no sound thus far), incredible original interior paneling, 10 on a scale of 10 original front floor mat, beautiful 80mph speedometer with crystal clear original light gels, very nice original steering wheel, e-brake handle with virtually no wear, accelerator pedal with loads of original black paint still intact, washer bottle with rubber pump still together, spotless original sun visors, stellar rear view mirror, excellent Salt and Pepper upholstery, near mint original ice box, mustard cushion upholstery, wood paneling, spice rack, the list goes on and on!

Mechanically the Bus is bone stock, original, and features the original 1500cc engine, full synchromesh reduction box transaxle, and 6 volt electrical system with everything working with the exception of the radio.  It was extensively revived with new brakes, a tune up, valve adjustment, fluid change, NOS exhaust system, and a fresh set of BFGoodrich 7.00-14 white stripe bias plies that matches the M code plate which shows it was ordered with white stripe tires as well.  The Bus is tight, positive, and quiet in ways that only a well-cared-for and low mileage survivor would be.

The elderly original owner could not recall where he put the original tent or wood slat roof rack.  The tent is unfortunately missing and a reproduction roof rack was installed as it was the closest match for the condition of the rest of the Bus.

If you speak with any serious Bus collector, they will tell you that the most important factors in collecting are condition and originality and that they are only original once.  This Bus embodies those characteristics to a very high standard and will certainly be a difficult one to top.  Thanks!
