1967 21 Window Walkthru, Tasteful Mild Custom, Very Nicely Done!
Here
is a very stylish and quality built 21 Window Walkthru with
approximately 800 miles since completion. It is visually
striking, attention to detail is evident, it has several custom and
high performance upgrades, and it has been fully sorted and is running
and driving flawlessly.
The
list of features on this one is very long and includes a professionally
built 1700cc stroker engine,
properly lowered suspension with a narrowed beam and straight axle
rear, Porsche 944 front disc brakes, all correct 1967 seats and kick
panels including the short walkthru middle, safari windows, Gene Berg
shifter, Porsche Fuch's style replica wheels, Fat Mat sound deadening,
Optima battery, factory 12 volt electrics, new wiring harness, and being a desirable factory 6 popout window Bus, too. This Bus is in reality what many guys envision when they dream about a mild custom 21 Window.
The
paint and body are exceptional and fresh in the original factory colors
of Titian Red and Beige Grey (L555/L472) and the bumpers were painted
in the correct Silver White (L82). All of the necessary body work and
welding was professionally done at Volksfab and the results are
beautiful. The doors, hatch, decklid, apron, both pointed end bumpers,
etc. are correct for a the Bus,
too. The safari windows were match painted and then assembled by
Wolfgang International. All 6 popout window frames are rust free as
they are brand new. The polished aluminum Deluxe body and bumper trim
are all brand new as well. Additionally, all of the window and body
seals were replaced with new during the assembly.
The interior is extremely nice and very faithful to the original Mesh Platinum scheme.
It has all the proper rows of seats including the correct and
hard-to-find 1967 short walkthru middle with kick panels.
The panels and seat covers are from TMI and have been expertly fitted
with no wrinkles. Fat Mat sound deadener was installed behind the
panels and keep the Bus very quiet and "solid" sounding on the road.
The headliner is a proper pinhole vinyl and is beautifully installed,
too. Up front the cab features a great dash complete with the
original-to-the-Bus radio (not currently hooked up and no antenna holes
drilled) and the correct Deluxe dash clock that does not work. Proper
80mph speedometer with Deluxe chrome ring, 12 volt 1967 gas gauge, and
Deluxe chrome ashtray are also intact and superb. Other cool interior
details include the original Deluxe rear seat luggage bar, correct 1967
rear view mirror, and the 1967 dated spare wheel is even in original
paint and has an original Continental bias ply tire on it! A quick peek
beneath the new black rubber floor mats shows exceptionally cleanly
painted floors, too.
Mechanically the Bus has seen a great deal of tasteful, quality, and
expensive custom touches. The engine is a 1700cc stroker built by
Morris Race Engines. Some of its many features include:
* 74mm Stroker Crankshaft
* 85.5 mm Pistons and Cylinders
* NOS Single Port Heads
* DPR Stroker Clearanced Connecting Rods
* SLR Treated Lifters and Custom Grind Mild Torque Camshaft
* American Made Bugpack Cam Gears
* Valve Geometry Professionally Set Up
* 8 Dowel Flywheel
* 26mm Oil Pump
It has been professionally tuned in and runs and drives perfectly.
The suspension features the following:
* Narrowed Beam, 4.5"
* Dropped Spindles, 3.5"
* Adjustable Beam
* New Tie Rods, Draglink, Center Pin, and Bearings
* Traditional Straight Axle Rear End
* Rebuilt Transaxle from Strictly Speed
* New Continental Low Profile Tires on Porsche Fuch's Replica Wheels
Other mechanical details include Porsche 944 front disc brakes, Type 3
rear drum brakes drilled for Porsche pattern, Bay Window dual circuit
master cylinder with a remote reservoir fill, the desirable factory 12
volt electrical system, Optima battery, and a brand new wiring harness.
All of the electrics work including the high beams and 4 way flasher
with the exception of the previously mentioned dash clock. Lastly the
shifter assembly has been completely rebuilt and shifts beautifully
through the spendy Gene Berg shifter.
This Bus is exceedingly well done and the goals of quality, style, high
attention to detail, and modern road drivability are clearly evident
throughout. Thanks!
