1967 Westfalia SO42 Camper with 41,804 Original Miles, Original Pearl White Paint, a True Time Warp!
This
super exceptional Westfalia Camper is very much the definition of a
time warp Vintage Volkswagen. It was purchased new in
Connecticut back in 1967 by a German engineer. He had taken it on a
few cross country trips to visit his daughter in Oregon and by 1971 the
Bus had just 40,000 original miles on it. Sadly the owner passed away
that year and the family hung onto their Dad's old Westy until 1993 when
they sold it to a car collector in the Pacific
Northwest. He carefully detailed, serviced, and revived the Bus in
1995 and now, 17 years later, the Bus has seen only 41,804 miles from
new and is virtually in the same condition it was when the original
owner parked it for the last time 41 years ago in 1971!
Back
in 1999 the Bus was featured in the Vintage Issue of Hot VW's Magazine
and the story of its life is recorded in great detail there.
Some
of the many features include being almost all original paint with the
exceptions of the bumpers and wheels which were repainted during the
revival, extremely dry and straight body, beautiful original interior
including seat covers, paneling, curtains, rubber, and hardware.
Additionally it has the
original tent, poles, and tent bags in excellent shape.
The
body is in excellent original condition and displays the factory
original Pearl White paint that is still strong and glossy till this
day! There are some light chips and tiny dings you'd expect to see on a
now 45 year old original Bus. The nose has lots of little stone chips
that have been touched up with a tiny dab of paint. There are also a
couple small dings in the nose to the left of the emblem as well as a
small crease dent in the roof above the rear hatch. There body is
incredibly dry with phenomenal original floors, rockers, jack points,
outriggers, etc. This Bus was very well cared for, properly stored out
of the weather, and its current condition demonstrates that fact
clearly. The bumpers are the correct pointed end type and all of the
doors, decklid, and apron are correct and original, too.
The
interior is also extremely nice
and
original, too. You might note that the original icebox is missing and a
vintage ice chest is in its place. That is an interesting story in
that the original Engineer owner had the dealership remove the icebox at
the dealership as he had designed a new custom layout for that area
that also utilizes a two burner propane cooking stove that attaches to
the top of the divider wall. In true German Engineer fashion he
sketched detailed mechanical drawings on drafting paper with the
dimensions and specs and that original drawing is also including in the
large stack of paperwork and service records of the Bus. Other interior
details to note are the superb original seat covers, excellent dash
with proper 1967 only radio block off plate, original plaid window
curtains, near mint front cab panels, excellent original wood paneling
with only light signs of their years, and a very nice poptop canvas,
too. A peek beneath the front floor
mats will show that
this Bus is mega clean.
Mechanically the Bus is fully turnkey
and runs and drives well. Back in 1995 when it was revived it was
treated to a new set of cylinder heads, a new carburetor, 009
distributor, and a new coil, too. Other than that the Bus was serviced
including brakes and tires and otherwise remains largely original with
the original 1500 single port engine, stock 46mm big nut reduction box
transaxle, and the original factory 12 volt electrical system, too.
Without
a doubt this is one of the nicest unrestored SO42 Westfalias you will
likely ever encounter. The extreme low mileage, known history,
excellent and shiny original paint, and superb straight and dry body are
testimony to a truly quality German built Volkswagen Camper Bus.
Thanks!
